Are Night Shades Always an Issue for those with Rheumatoid Arthritis?

If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you have likely heard the advice to ditch tomatoes, egg plant, peppers, and potatoes. This group of plants, known as nightshades, contains alkaloids like solanine. Some people believe these compounds trigger inflammation and joint pain. Patients frequently ask me if they need to eliminate these foods permanently to manage their autoimmunity.

My answer? It depends. You are not a statistic, and your body does not react to food the same way your neighbor’s body does.

The Nightshade Controversy

Nightshades belong to the Solanaceae family. Common culprits include:

  • Tomatoes
  • White potatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Bell peppers
  • Chili peppers and paprika

Proponents of the anti-nightshade diet argue that these foods increase gut permeability or trigger an immune response in sensitive individuals. The logic is that by reducing the chemical load on your immune system, you can reduce systemic inflammation. While this makes sense in theory, the clinical evidence is mixed. There is no one-size-fits-all rule for rheumatoid arthritis management.

Personalized Nutrition Over Blanket Bans

At Healing Roots, we look at the whole person. We do not believe in removing entire food groups permanently, especially without a clear reason. We have a systematic approach that helps you to determine what foods should and shouldn’t be in your daily diet.

While we often start with elimination diets to help you determine what you’re sensitive to, our nutritional support doesn’t stop there.  We help patients to personalize nutrition based on their symptoms, physical exam, labs and constitution.  Our recommendations for you will change over time as your body heals.  While you might be sensitive to nights shades today, as your body heals the sensitivity is likely to go away.

How to Test Your Sensitivity

If you suspect nightshades are a problem, do not guess. Use a structured elimination and reintroduction protocol. This is the only way to get clear data on how your body reacts.

First, remove all nightshades from your diet for three to four weeks. But, you shouldn’t remove just night shades.  You will also want to remove other common foods sensitivities and all inflammatory foods. Elimination diets are the gold standard for determining food sensitivities.  This approach is far superior to removing one food or food group at a time to evaluate sensitivities.  If you have an autoimmune condition with leaky gut and an oversensitive immune response, you are likely having reactions to many foods and a heightened reaction to inflammatory foods.  If you remove tomatoes and potatoes but continue to eat processed oils or refined sugars, you’ll remain inflamed and be unable to evaluate whether removing night shades helps or not.

During the elimination period, monitor your joint pain, stiffness, and overall energy levels. Elimination diets are not meant to be a forever thing. They should only be followed strictly for as long as a patient needs to bring down inflammation and see gut healing begin.  Then foods should be reintroduced.

Reintroduce one nightshade at a time. Eat a generous portion and watch your body for the next 72 hours. Pay attention to:

  • Increased joint swelling or pain
  • Digestive distress
  • Skin breakouts
  • Changes in sleep quality
  • Changes in mood, brain fog and concentration
  • Any changes for better or worse physically, mentally and emotionally.

Keep notes during this process. Objective data beats internet advice every time.
